Did you know that UNC Health Pardee’s comprehensive cancer center has its own specialized oncology pharmacy? This pharmacy stores, prepares, and dispenses all medications administered within Pardee Cancer Center.
Our team includes board-certified oncology pharmacists and certified pharmacy technicians who work together to ensure safe and high-quality care for every patient. The pharmacists review treatment plans, check for harmful drug interactions, follow lab results, and provide patient education.
The pharmacy features specialized “clean” rooms where medicines are carefully prepared following strict safety rules. Using advanced technology to carefully weigh the medications to ensure proper doses are delivered. On average, the pharmacy prepares approximately 1,050 medicines each month and dispenses an estimated 2,200 doses of medication each month.
The pharmacists work closely with various specialty pharmacies to ensure that patients receive their oral oncology medications at affordable prices. Financial assistance is available to assist patients with the cost of clinic administered medications and an average of 30 free medications are dispensed to our patients each month.
The pharmacy also dispenses investigational medications that are issued as part of clinical trials. Pardee Cancer Center also houses a clinical research department with three dedicated coordinators. The clinical research team uses a collaborative approach that allows Pardee to offer research trials to our patients. Currently, there are 22 clinical trials open that will impact the future care of cancer patients. These trial medications may be administered within the clinic, or they may be sent home with the patient for self-administration. Together, the pharmacy and clinical research team are playing a vital role in the advancement of cancer care for our patients.
