9 Ways to Age Gracefully

Aging gracefully isn’t about hiding the years; it’s about embracing them, reminding us to accept another year’s blessings and recommit to living our best, healthiest lives. Aging is inevitable — why not do it as gracefully and healthfully as possible? Here are some tips to help you make the most of your physical, mental and emotional health at any age.

Get a physical.

Whether you are 30 or 90, it’s important to get a yearly check-up to make sure your body is functioning as it should. Depending on your age, overall health and gender, you may need different exams or screenings to make sure everything is running smoothly. Don’t have a primary care provider? Keep it moving.

The more active you are, the more active you’ll stay. This is important whether you work at a desk all day or are retired and don’t get out of the house much. Regular physical activity keeps your muscles and bones strong, reduces back pain and other aches, helps you manage your weight, reduces your risk of chronic diseases and can even extend your life.

Nourish your body.

Choose fresh, whole foods that feed your body the nutrients it deserves. The less processed your food is, the better you’ll look and feel. Limit fried foods, creamy sauces and sugary desserts to occasional indulgences. Fill your plate with half fresh vegetables, one quarter lean protein (fish, chicken breast, ground turkey, beans or legumes) and one quarter whole grains or healthy starches (such as quinoa, a sweet potato, brown rice or whole wheat bread).

Sip smarter.

Skip sugary soft drinks and fruit juices. They pack added sugar and calories your body doesn’t need, and they don’t fill you up like food does. Diet drinks with artificial sweeteners aren’t much better — studies show they can lead to weight gain as well. Stick to water (add lemon or your favorite fruit for flavor), or unsweetened tea or coffee.

Wear sunscreen.

Never skip your SPF, even on cloudy days. You get UV ray exposure walking to your car, through your car windshield and even through your windows at home or the office.

Cultivate your relationships.

Being social can keep your mentally and emotionally healthy, so take time to see family and friends. It’s never too late to meet new people! Join a gym or church, volunteer, take a free class at a community college or get a part-time job for fun.

Never stop learning.

Keep your mind sharp by reading regularly, taking classes (check your nearest community college or community center), trying new activities, cooking new recipes, or doing brain teaser puzzles and memory games.

Relax and unwind.

Keep stress and worry in check with prayer, journaling, time outdoors, meditation, stretching, deep breathing or a massage.

Get plenty of sleep.

Older adults may need less sleep than young people, but it’s still important to clock at least seven hours a night. If you have trouble sleeping, talk to your doctor.

The more love and attention you give your body, the more it will love you back. Talk to your medical provider about more ways you can stay healthy for life.
